Redshirt sophomore offensive guard Garrett Corbett sustained a leg injury on Saturday during the scrimmage that the coaching staff thought at worst was a high ankle sprain. It forced him into using crutches and a walking boot this week as he watched practice from the sidelines.
It was after practice on Wednesday night that San Diego State head coach Rocky Long broke the news to the media that the injury was more severe than they previously thought.
"He's going to have to get his leg operated on. He's got a broken bone in whatever the lower leg is and a high ankle sprain all at the same time. One of the ligaments is damaged enough that the doctors thought they should operate on it."
Corbett will be out for the year and a timetable for the surgery is still unknown.
The 6-foot-5 and 290 pound right guard was backing up Nik Embernate that will now force true freshman Nico Siragusa to run with the second team in the two-deep.
"Personally I hope that means he doesn't have to play but he's running with the twos right now," Long said.
The German Unknown
A large human being wearing an SDSU jersey with the number 56 was seen working with strength coach Adam Hall on Wednesday night.
"I don't know anything about him," Long said. "He is new here in school here. He's from Germany. He wanted to come out for the team so we have an opening on our 105 list. He passed the physical."
It was the first day for the unknown player with the football team. He will have to go through the mandatory steps of two days with just helmets, two days of helmets and shoulder pads before he can put full pads on.
"We don't know anything about him. He just walked in and said he was a new student here and wanted to come out for the football team. He's a big strong looking guy so we are going to give him a chance to see if he wants to play football."
"He said he played football back home but I don't know what caliber of football."
Roster space was made for the "German" by taking walk-on defensive back Mario Lodge off the 105. Lodge had a concussion in the first couple days of fall camp and still has concussion-like symptoms. He'll be able to return once school starts.
San Diego State had their first closed practice on Wednesday morning to prepare for Washington.
"It was ok," Long explained. "You have to train scout teams too. This was the first time that they were actually scout team so they were a little shaky. If they are a little shaky and don't give you a real good picture the other guys look bad too because the picture is not exactly what they are going to see. You've put a game plan in and trained them to react to the way things are and if they don't run it that way. It was a little ragged."
The team will have another closed practice Friday morning.
-NFL scout from the Cleveland Browns was in attendance.
-Sophomore El Camino CC transfer Derek Largent has moved up the depth chart to one of the two-deep linebackers.
"Largent has done a nice job," Long said. "I don't know if he's ready to play yet but he's done a nice job since he's been here and Vaness [Harris] is a little beat up. He's not beat up enough to be able to play but we are trying to give him a little bit of a rest. He's got a sore knee, sore shoulder and all that."
-Senior wide receiver Dominique Sandifer moved up to second spot at the X wide receiver spot behind Brice Butler.
"He seems like he's 100% back and I'm not sure if he feels confident enough to put that kind of pressure on his leg and everything," Long said. "He looks to me that he's 100%. Hopefully he'll have a good year."
-Long said that the offense plans to use two or three tight ends and four to six wide receivers depending on the game plan.
-San Diego State commits Trey Lomax and Addison Morrow checked out practiced yesterday on an unofficial visit.
"It went well, got a chance to get a feel for the tempo and how they run things," Lomax said. "I liked it. I could definitely see myself getting used to it."
