Quarterbacks – It was Oregon State transfer Ryan Katz first game as San Diego State's quarterback. He finished the night going 10 for 19 with 128 yards while he ran the ball 16 times for 77 yards. Of the 128 passing yards, 47 of it came from a trick play to walk-on wide receiver Tim Vizzi. Katz was harassed all night that led to an early pick and a sack fumble but felt he made the best he could out of the situation. B-
Running Backs – Senior lead back Walter Kazee went off in the first quarter as he had 3 carries for 34 yards resulting in 9 for 86. Kazee had double-digit long carries of 18, 14 and 26. Adam Muema only had 11 for 32 but did have a 4th and goal touchdown from the 1 where he kept the legs turning into the end zone. Chase Price did not get a carry. B
Wide Receivers – Colin Lockett lead the Aztecs in receptions and yards with 4 for 48 but did have a game changing fumble that went the other way for six and most likely the game. Vizzi had 47-yard touchdown off a trick play where he lined up wide near the away sideline where no Huskie player saw him in site except for Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian but couldn't call a timeout before the ball was snapped. Dominique Sandifer who impressed in fall camp stepped late with a huge 28-yard catch in the 4th. USC transfer Brice Butler was missing in action tonight as he had 0 catches with multiple drops including a for sure touchdown. Ezell Ruffin also had 0 receptions. The receiving core just couldn't get open consistently. D
Offensive Line –The offensive line gave up four sacks but the number could have been much higher as Katz was scrambling throughout, never having time to throw. Washington was able to get consistent pressure without having to bring extra guys. Center Alec Johnson had a bad shotgun snap to Adam Dingwell that forced a large loss, wiping out the momentum off The Opening kickoff return. D-
Defensive Line – The youngest and most inexperienced part of the team struggled in this matchup. They were getting pushed around at the line of scrimmage leading to huge holes in the running game and giving the Huskies all day to throw. F
Linebackers – JuCo transfer Derek Largent continues to impress as he had a grown man sack, throwing the UW quarterback into the ground. The core as a whole had no answer for Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins who had 9 receptions for 82 yards. The linebackers were tested in the running game as the running backs were hitting through the line of scrimmage untouched and at full speed. Vaness Harris did have 5 total tackles including a sack and MLB Jake Fely had 7. B
Secondary – The back five was eaten alive in the first 12 minutes in this one as Washington quarterback Keith Price went 11 for 12 with 88 yards and a touchdown. It is also never a good thing when your three leading tacklers come from secondary: Leon McFadden 8, Nat Berhe 8 and Rene Siluano 7. Despite an incredible first quarter Price only finished 25 for 35 for 222 yards as the secondary clamped down by brining the blitz. Siluano forced a fumble late and Berhe recovered it. B+
Special Teams – With zero field goal kicking, limited punts and only one big play in the special teams it's no surprise the grade I will eventually give to this unit. Converted safety Brandon Wright was the lone bright spot having 3 kick returns for 93 yards including a game opening 51-yard kick off return. Inc.
Coaching – SDSU head coach Rocky Long made many non-traditional calls during this one by going for 2-point conversions instead of PAT's in a normal game situation. Ultimately I never felt it affected the overall outcome. It took offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig too long to let Katz fling the ball. Aztecs felt to be hitting their stride in the second half. The 2:1 run ratio is not what I expected from a team who was playing catch up through out but a lot of that can be attributed to both the offensive line and wide receivers. C-
