Fely MW Defensive Player of the Week again!

San Diego State football notes include middle linebacker Jake Fely being named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks, Boise State head coach Chris Peterson gives the Aztecs credit and much more...

San Diego State middle linebacker Jake Fely was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

"I was just trying to come off the edge fast," Fely said of his impressive game against UNLV. "We preach being physical every day at practice. (When) we're getting the opportunity to blitz like that, you got to try to show something. That's what I was trying to do for the defense."

Fely continued to build upon his recent success, this time against the Rebels with 11 tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble.

It was the second time in three weeks that the sophomore earned MW Defensive Player of the Week honors. He also became the first Aztec to earn the award twice in the same season since linebacker Joe Martin in 2006.

The Oceanside (Calif.) native is second in the team in tackles (59), leading in sacks (7) and tied for first in forced fumbles and fumble recoveries.

Respect for the Aztecs

Boise State head coach Chris Peterson has not only been impressed with the SDSU football program but this year's team.

"I think they are a great program, a lot of respect for them," Peterson explained. "It's going to be one of those games that we have to play our best, compete with them and there's no question about it."

"Put their tape on and defense they obviously have that confusing style, all over the place, play hard. On offense they are a power football team, very physical team on both sides."

It sounds like the Broncos will have their hands full on Saturday night.

Finishing Notes

- It was Monday afternoon that Utah State beat writer Tim Olsen tweeted:

"On football, Barnes said #USU will no longer be playing San Diego State at home in 2013 - SDSU wanted out, Ags needed to drop a game."

The Aztecs will now be looking for an 2013 opponent. This was expected news after last week when word spread that SDSU began discussions with Ohio State for a possible game in '13.

-Leon McFadden received high praise from BSU head coach Chris Peterson after being asked what makes the senior corner so good at Monday's press conference.

"[He] covers good," Peterson said. "He's just one of those guys that has a lot of skill, obviously played for a long time, savvy in terms of what is going on out there. He's a good player, there is no doubt about it."

-Aztecs will face Boise State while the Broncos are banged up in the secondary. Peterson announced sophomore cornerback Bryan Douglas is out for the year with a torn ACL. BSU will also be without safety Lee Hightower against the Aztecs.

-Does Peterson know SDSU head coach Rocky Long that well?

"Not really. I mean I've got to know him over the past couple years," Peterson said. "Certainly know him as a coach and the respect everyone has for him. The time I have spent with him he's a great guy and does a great job with his team."
