When San Diego State Has The Ball
Quarterback Adam Dingwel l received his first career start last week against UNLV as he completed 13-of-26 passes for 231 yards and 2 touchdowns but did throw an interception. How will the young signal caller handle playing in the largest game of his life on the road in Boise, ID could determine if the Aztecs have a shot in this game. It was during last year's Boise State game that Adam Muema had his breakout performance with 119 yards with a pair of touchdowns on only 13 carries. In the receiving game it was wide receiver Colin Lockett (8 rec. and 149 yards) and tight end Gavin Escobar (8 rec., 113 yards and 2 TD's) who had huge games. SDSU will need similar performances against Boise State.
The Broncos have one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing only 13.6 points per game and giving up 311 yards of total offense (11th in the nation). BSU has a fantastic pass defense but has been prone to giving up mileage on the ground, 145 yards per game. SDSU must be able to run their power running plays to wear down the opposing defense.
When Boise State Has The Ball
The Broncos score around 28.5 points a game due to 382 yards of total offense (216 passing and 166 rushing). BSU doesn't have the same air it out style as they once did with Kellen Moore under center. Junior Joe Southwick is now the Broncos starting quarterback. He's been efficient in managing the game by completing 66% of his passes with 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His main target is Matt Miller. The sophomore has caught 42 balls for 435 yards with two touchdowns. In the red zone you will see the BSU look for slot receiver Chris Potter who has 3 of his 14 catches go for six points.
The Broncos also lost running back Doug Martin so lead back D.J. Harper takes over the reins and is doing well, averaging 4.9 a carry this season. BSU's offense will be tested, as the Aztecs are extremely stout against the run. The concern for SDSU could be the Boise State's offensive line as they have only given up 4 sacks all season long so it could be throwing practice for Southwick. If San Diego State can create pressure they will be in fantastic shape.
Edge: Boise State
Kicker Chance Marden has been lights out since missing his first three attempts of this season, connecting on eight straight field goals. Punter/kickoff special Seamus McMorrow had two of his five kickoffs went for touchbacks against UNLV. BSU Kicker Michael Frisina is 10-for-15 on the season with a long of only 30 yards. He's 2-for-7 from 30 yards or longer. Punter Trevor Harman has been booting the ball for 41 yards a punt with a fourth of his kicks going 50+. Boise State only allows 17.9 yards per kickoff return.
Edge: San DIego State
There is no x-factor in this game. You will out will their opponent? This will be the toughest, most important game for SDSU since Rocky Long has been in San Diego. The Aztecs Mountain West Conference championship hopes are on the line as they head to a stadium with the blue turf that will be rocking with 30,000+ crazy Bronco fans.
The Aztecs are on the road, facing an opponent of this level all season. San Diego State has to control the clock and game with the running game but the If there was a year to take down Boise State, this would be the year but the Broncos are such a sound football team that I see it being too tough of a task for the Aztecs to pull off on the road. BSU wins their 8th consecutive game and more importantly stays undefeated in the Mountain West.
