AztecReport.com hands out grades for the San Diego State players as they took on UC San Diego.
San Diego State 80 UC San Diego 56
Xavier Thames – 20 mins, 3 pts, 2 rebs, 3 ast, 0 blks, 1 stls, 0 TO
Thames was quiet on Monday night but he had a 3:0 assist to turnover ratio and the Aztecs turned it over 9 times. (C+)
Chase Tapley – 24 mins, 15 pts, 3 rebs, 3 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl, 0 TO
Once again it was the senior who led the team in the scoring by making 6-of-13 shots. Tapley was only 1-for-5 from downtown but nothing to be worried about. He was the one that jump-started the offense for the second straight exhibition game. (B+)
Jamaal Franklin – 21 mins, 13 pts, 2 rebs, 3 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 4 TO
The future NBA pro connected on 5-of-9 attempts including multiple huge dunks. He forced the subject a couple times that led into a charge and three other turnovers. (B)
J.J. O'Brien – 24 mins, 10 pts, 6 rebs, 1 ast, 0 blk, 5 stl, 1 TO
O'Brien started for the second straight game and earned my highest grade of the two exhibition games. The sophomore made 5-of-8 field goals but brings much more to this Aztecs basketball team. SDSU head coach Steve Fisher worded it best in the post game press conference: "He has so much value added that does not show up on the score board." Not to mention he also had 5 steals. (A-)
Deshawn Stephens – 22 mins, 6 pts, 1 rebs, 0 ast, 2 blk, 0 stl, 1 TO
Stephens received around five post touches and showed flashes that made me drool! He had one moment that he caught the post feed a little bit off the block, faced up fast then took one quick dribble into the lane for the close shot. He missed it but he couldn't do that a year ago. All that being said he only had a single rebound against an undersized D-II school which is unacceptable. (C-)
Winston Shepard – 18 mins, 8 pts, 4 rebs, 2 ast, 3 blk, 0 stl, 3 TO
The freshman continues to impress and with that comes confidence. He not only filled out the stat sheet but his versatility showed on Monday night. Shepard played the 1-4 positions. Didn't matter who was guarding him but he would back down his defender looking to score or dish. (B+)
James Rahon – 16 mins, 7 pts, 0 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO
It was Rahon again who was the first sub into the game along with Shepard. The senior made 3 buckets including a 3-pointer. (B-)
Dwayne Polee – 15 mins, 4 pts, 1 rebs, 2 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO
The St. Johns transfer looked more comfortable in this game. He finished well around the bucket and always looking to move without the ball. (B-)
Matt Shrigley – 13 mins, 6 pts, 4 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO
Shrigley was held scoreless in the first half but got going once the game was already over. The wing was the only player to hit multiple three pointers. (C+)
Skylar Spencer – 13 mins, 6 pts, 5 rebs, 1 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO
It was an impressive performance by the freshman in limited action. Spencer was busy on the glass and made both of his lay-ins. Hugest surprise of the night: Spencer made both of his free throws. (B+)
1) Aztecs fixed their sloppiness as the team only turned the ball over 9 times on the night. UCSD showed a zone at times but nothing that will mimic to the size of Syracuse.
2) Speaking of size, UCSD is extremely small in the front court but was still able to only lose the rebounding battle by 2 and did grab 13 offensive rebounds. SDSU can't let that happen on Friday.
3) San Diego State has struggled from three-point range in their first two contests (11/39; 28.2%).
