Amarillo (Tex.) Palo Duro safety Montrel Meander is beginning to take all five his official visits after a 109-tackle season.
He led his high school to a 6-5 record, third in district, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Palo Duro took a huge step in the right direction after finishing 2-8 last season and began this season 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
The 6-foot-3 and 185-pound safety took his first official visit this past weekend to San Diego State.
"I loved it," Meander expressed. "I enjoyed it. I wasn't ready to come home. The players showed me a good time and the coaches were great. I asked the players about the coaches and they really had nothing bad to say."
"I got to experience how the players really are outside of practice. I got to see how their personalities are, what kind of people they are and there are some really good people. They take coaching well, have a good time, so that really stood out to me."
It was first time Meander has been to the state of California and he was blown away.
"The scenery in San Diego is just beautiful, when I touchdown to when I left," Meander explained. "When I got there it was kind of dark and drizzly but it wasn't like it was raining too hard or anything like that. I could still see the city was real beautiful. The next day it was just amazing out there; perfect weather and all of that."
Coach Tony White is recruiting the out of state prospect. The Aztecs see him playing the free safety position that is the "Aztec" in SDSU's 3-3-5 defense.
"They are basically telling me that when I come I'll have to compete for a spot," Meander said. "They like a guy with my size and ability. Not only am I tall but also I can use my feet real well, which is what they really like."
Meander will visit New Mexico next week and plans to visit Houston, Washington State and Texas-San Antonio during the month of January.
He considers the five programs he's taking official visit to as his "final five." After the final visit he'll sit down with his family, come to a decision and then sign with the program of his choice.
What will be deciding factors?
"If I could see myself there as a student-athlete, the facilities, graduation rate of the football team and my major [mass communications]," Meander said.
