San Diego State defeated University of San Diego 72-56 on Saturday night...

THE FACTS: 18/15 San Diego State (8-1) became "City Champions" by topping USD 72-56. The Aztecs were led by Chase Tapley who finished with 15 points and Jamaal Franklin had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Senior forward Deshawn Stephens added 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting.

QUOTABLE: "We won the game because we guarded like crazy. We did a great job defensively. In particular, I though Chase Tapley in the first half did not let Johnny Dee get any clean looks."

THE STAT: San Diego State made 13-of-25 shots in each half (52%) including 16-of-19 from the charity stripe (84%). 8-day layoff, no problem!

TURNING POINT: The Aztecs were down 18-16 with 10:16 left in the first half. After that media timeout SDSU went on a 12-0 run which included back-to-back three pointers by Tapley.

THE NUMBER: 28. San Diego State has now won 28 straight games against teams from California.

QUOTABLE II: "I like to call it a rivalry. Everyone calls it the ‘City Championship.' We knew we were going to get their best game. The last three years they've been a tough game… It's always a tough competition, USD, we just love this rivalry and love the competition."

HOT: Tapley wasn't going to let the long layoff cool him off as the senior made 4-of-7 shots and all five of his free throw attempts. He also passed D.J. Gay (1,178 career points) on the school's all-time scoring list.

NOT: Johnny Dee. The sophomore struggled in the first half by being held scoreless with multiple air balls. He scored 9 points in the second half.

FRESHMAN WATCH: Skylar Spencer continues to be the freshman making the largest impact. In 19 minutes the big man had 3 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.

NOTABLE: San Diego State won its 31st straight regular-season game vs. unranked non-conference foes and improves to 51-1 in its last 52 home games vs. unranked teams.
