THE FACTS: 18/15 San Diego State (11-1) beat Indiana State (6-4) 62-55 in the Diamond Head Classic semifinals despite shooting 41.7% (20/48) from the field. Jamaal Franklin led the way with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Chase Tapley finished with 13 points and Xavier Thames added 12.
QUOTABLE: "It was a hard fought battle. It was more of a defensive struggle today. Both teams on tired legs, shots weren't falling for either team. We had to find a way to win and we did. A lot had to do with Jamaal's [Franklin] rebounding efforts. He was sensational."
-- SDSU associate head coach/head coach in-waiting Brian Dutcher on the win.
THE STAT: The Aztecs defense held Indiana State to 21-of-48 shooting (43.8%) and turned them over 17 times.
TURNING POINT: Indiana State's star player Jake Odum intentionally fouled Tapley on a fast break layup. The senior guard hit both free throws then knocked down a three pointer off the inbounds play to give SDSU the 51-44 lead with 4:36 remaining.
THE NUMBER: 7 to 17. That was the Sycamores' assist to turnover ratio against SDSU on Sunday.
QUOTABLE II: "For a one day prep I thought our kids did a great job. Our coaching staff had us ready. We weren't surprised by anything. I thought our game plan was solid and our defense was great … It won us the game today."
-- Dutcher continued about the win.
HOT: Franklin put the team on his back. He connected on 5-of-9 from the field and was 9-of-11 at the stripe.
NOT: San Diego State from downtown. The Aztecs made 4-of-17 three pointers after making 10-of-19 against USF on Saturday.
FRESHMAN WATCH: Skylar Spencer received 18 minutes off the bench, most of any reserve, including playing time during crunch time. He finished with 2 points and 5 rebounds.
"It feels good," Spencer said. "Kind of boosts my confidence when coach keeps me in when the game is tight."
NOTABLE: The Aztecs won its 24th straight game in the month of December.
UP NEXT: For San Diego State: Tuesday vs. Arizona in Diamond Head Classic Finals. For Indiana State: Tuesday vs. Miami (FL) in Diamond Head Classic third place game.
