Encino (Calif.) Crespi defensive end Ray Davison was planning on waiting until National Signing Day to announce his decision, but after a whirlwind weekend in Berkeley, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound one-time Northwestern commit decided to make it official with California, becoming the Golden Bears' 26th commitment on Sunday following his official visit.
"Haha, yes, it is official I am committed," Davison told Cal Sports Digest via text early this afternoon.
Davison had his offer from the Wildcats rescinded when he decided to make his trip to Berkeley this weekend, but Cal was right there waiting to snag the three-star defender, who committed in a one-on-one meeting with head coach Sonny Dykes.
As a senior, Davison recorded 55 tackles, six sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown for the Celts, and will join one-time Crespi teammate Chris Harper as a Golden Bear next season.
Davison is academically-inclined, with a cumulative GPA over 3.5 and a fall semester GPA of 3.71. He plans on becoming a CPA, and, he said, the beauty of choosing between Cal and Northwestern was that he was choosing between two schools with strong accounting programs.
Davison had been gunning for his offer from the Bears for quite some time, and finally, early this month, that offer came, providing Davison with quite a decision to make. He knew that if he tripped to Cal, his offer from Northwestern would be pulled, but he decided to visit, anyway, because he couldn't make a decision without having at least seen Berkeley.
Davison is one of a crop of at least three new commitments for the Bears on Sunday following the official visit weekend, including Houston (Tex.) Cypress Falls defensive tackle Jacobi Hunter and Santa Monica City College defensive tackle Marcus Manley.
Stay tuned for more from the visit weekend.
