THE FACTS: 22/20 San Diego State (16-5, 4-3 MW) fell to Air Force (14-6, 5-2) 70-67 on the road as the Aztecs drop to fifth place in the Mountain West. SDSU was without starting point guard Xavier Thames (back) for the third conference game of the season. Chase Tapley (wrist) was clearly limited as he only scored 2 points on 1-of-7 shooting. Jamaal Franklin led the way for the Aztecs with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Michael Lyons had 25, 5 and 4 for the Falcons.
QUOTABLE: "We had two good looks on the last possession. J.J. (O'Brien) made a great offensive rebound, insightful to look to kick and the second one was more open then the first one. We'll take our chances with those. Unfortunately those didn't go down, either one of them.
-- SDSU head coach Steve Fisher on the last possession of the game
THE STAT: Air Force shot 25-of-51 from the field (49%) and had 20 assists on 25 buckets.
TURNING POINT: San Diego State tied the game at 47-all with 12:12 remaining. Falcons went on a 15-6 run over the next six minutes that was ignited by Lyons. Aztecs eventually fought all the way back but it ultimately was too much to overcome.
THE NUMBER: 30. The amount of three pointers attempted by Air Force. They connected on 12 of them for 40%.
QUOTABLE II: "Chase (Tapley) couldn't shoot the ball the way Chase could shoot it. He was reluctant to shoot it. He was 0-for-5 with five great looks from three-point range. He's our best three-point shooter."
"We are a much better team with Xavier (Thames) on the floor or have a chance to be on the floor for at least part of the game but no one cares about that. With or without X we have to find a way to win games. I think we'll try to put our heads together. Tell me what the doctors are saying, get the MRI. I think it is time we all have a little sit down, I'm a part of it, I listen and talk. I get a little more focus and clarity on kind of where we are with that whole situation."
-- Fisher on injuries of Tapley (moderate sprain right wrist) and Thames (back)
HOT: San Diego State demolished the Falcons inside to keep the game within striking distance. They won on the glass (37-23) and scored 38 points in the paint.
NOT: The Aztecs from outside as the unit shot 19 times from beyond the arc but only hit two of them (10.5%).
FRESHMAN WATCH: Winston Shepard had a bounce back game offensively for 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 21 minutes of action. Defensively was a different story, as the freshman couldn't handle the back cutting from the outside shooters of Air Force. He was caught sleeping numerous times watching the ball and with his hand down on weak close outs.
NOTABLE: San Diego State overcame a 12-point second half deficit, tying for third largest second half deficit overcome since the 1996-97 season. SDSU overcame 14 point second half deficits to defeat Monmouth (11-22-04) and UC Santa Barbara (12-22-99).
UP NEXT: For San Diego State: Wednesday vs. Boise State and following Saturday vs. Fresno State. For Air Force: Wednesday at New Mexico and Saturday at Nevada.
The Facts: No. 22 SDSU at Air Force
