2015 Corona (Calif.) Centennial point guard Sedrick Barefield took his first trip to Viejas Arena this season when San Diego State dismantled Nevada 88-75 on Saturday. He received quite a surprise on the visit.
"I liked it a lot," Barefield said of the trip. "I like how SDSU plays. I was just really happy to get that offer after the game. I wasn't expecting it. I had no idea that they were going to offer. I was excited and really happy. I feel like my hard work is paying off."
It was after the game that Barefield along with his family traveled down the tunnel into the Aztecs locker room where head coach Steve Fisher extended the offer.
"He just congratulated me on my success throughout the year," Barefield said. "He's hearing good things, seeing good things and wanted to offer me a scholarship."
Barefield joins Cameron Walker and Marcus LoVett as the only sophomores in the loaded 2015 class to receive an offer from SDSU.
"San Diego State is a great school," Barefield said. "My parents went there. They have a good education and coaching staff. I know the players get better there and work really hard. I like how they play defense and the positioning of their defense."
Not only was Sedrick's parents alumni but also his father is former Aztec point guard Ray Barefield (‘94), who played professionally in Europe after his collegiate career.
"He (Steve Fisher) does a great job not only of preparing them for basketball on the court, but you can really see the type of people he recruits and the type of people he builds and develops as they mature into young men," Ray said at the Aztec Basketball Reunion in 2010. "I have to say he does an excellent job with that."
While Sedrick was born into an SDSU family, it won't be something that will affect his ultimate decision.
"I just have to go wherever it's best for me," Barefield said. "Wherever I can fit in and stand out."
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect also holds offers from Connecticut, Kansas State, Memphis and Boston College.
In his sophomore season the elite guard led Corona Centennial to an outstanding year, headed into the playoffs as the No. 3 seed but Barefield's title run was cut short after getting knocked out in the second round of the playoffs. The team finished (26-3) after a (9-16) record the year before.
"Everything seems to be a lot better from my ball handling to my shooting," Barefield explained what he's improved on since last summer. "I've been working on my pull-up (jumper) a lot. A lot of mental things too so when the game gets tough, you have to dig deep so it gets you farther."
Barefield took the playoff loss (77-75 vs. Silverado) extremely tough that he was back in the gym the next day at 6:30 a.m. working out with one of his high school assistant coaches. He also went to skills training later that night.
"I've been looking at game tapes," the hardworking point guard said. "Trying to see what I could have done better."
"Right now I'm trying to work on my midrange game. Be able to hit that 15-footer consistently. But mainly really trying to work on everything."
