It was back in December when Spring Valley (Calif.) Mount Miguel guard Izzy Wagner had the city of San Diego watching his box scores on a nightly basis.
The senior was averaging over 40 points per contest during the winter month, including a 54-point outburst against Hilltop.
San Diego State assistant coach Tony Bland heard the buzz created by Wagner and had to stop by Mount Miguel to see the star in action firsthand. Over the course of the season Bland watched him a little less than half a dozen times.
It all came full circle for Wagner on Wednesday night when he visited Viejas Arena for the SDSU vs. Air Force game.
"After everything I just felt like it all went great," Wagner described the visit. "I really liked the school and talked with coach (Tony) Bland about it all so I just committed. I really like the school."
After the game the two-star prospect committed to San Diego State as a walk-on.
"It was very big," Wagner described how the visit affected his decision. "The campus life is crazy. They make you feel welcome. It was pretty nice. It was a real nice experience."
Wagner previously explained to AztecReport.com that he would love to be part of the SDSU program due to head coach Steve Fisher "letting his guards go."
"I've noticed that their guards aren't the scoring type so I feel like I can bring that," Wagner said of what he'll bring to Montezuma Mesa. "I'll bring defense, leadership and energy."
A huge factor for Wagner was location. His high school of Mount Miguel is less than 10 miles away from the San Diego State campus.
"It's very important to me so my family and friends can see me play," Wagner said.
While the 6-foot-2 combo guard didn't reel in any Division-I offers, he was fielding calls from Cal State Bakersfield, UC Riverside, Austin Peay and received a few D-II/NAIA offers.
Wagner is sold on the Aztecs and has no plans to play AAU basketball this spring.
