Kell Looks to Show Athleticism

St. Augustine guard Trey Kell has four offers right now and looks to add more with a big summer.

When Tony Bland left San Diego State to become the associate heard coach at USC, many wondered the impact it would have on players being recruited to San Diego State. In Trey Kell's case, that impact is minimal at best. "It doesn't have that much impact. Don't get me wrong, I like Tony a lot, I liked him as a coach and I'm sad he's leaving," Kell said, "but it's not gonna change the fact that I still like SDSU a lot."

Trey has offers from San Diego State, UC-Davis, UC-Irvine and San Diego. Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Pacific, St. Mary's and Harvard have all reached out to him recently.

Since Bland's departure, Kell has been in contact with the Aztecs, "So far I've talked to Dutch, he was talking to me making sure everything's ok and making sure that I'm ok with Coach Bland leaving."

With the Aztecs being the local school, Kell has made several trips to San Diego State and has come away impressed. "I just like the atmosphere, the playing style that they just play loose and don't worry about mistakes and I just love that everyone is important on the team," Kell told me.

This past season, Kell along with UC-Davis bound point guard Brynton Lamar helped lead the St. Augustine Saints to the San Diego Section D3 Championship as well as the D3 CIF State Championship. Kell has would like to do more of the same next season, "To repeat as San Diego Section champs, and then just try and work towards state, it'd be nice to win state but I don't expect us to. So basically just try and get better and hopefully everybody grows during the summer."

Kell got the AAU season started last week at the SoCal Hoop Review with his team, San Diego All Stars Pump N' Run. After a huge junior season, Kell is out to prove his skills to more schools, "Right now I'm just showing that I'm more athletic than I am. I play more of a slow temp game that most people, so must people think I don't have enough athleticism, so I gotta show that I have that."

Kell will look to make his decision before his senior season begins, "Right now I'm gonna make my decision when summer is over, after all my games are over."
