SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Keith Shamburger made two free throws with 6.2 seconds left, lifting San Jose State to a 51-50 victory over UC Irvine on Monday night.
UC Irvine's Adam Folker grabbed teammate Aaron Wright's miss and appeared to score the game-winning shot, but after a lengthy video review officials determined that Folker's shot didn't beat the buzzer.
Shamburger led the Spartans (1-1) with 12 points despite shooting just 3 for 12 from the field and 1 for 5 from 3-point range. Will Carter had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Calvin Douglas scored 10 for the Spartans.
Wright, a freshman guard, led UC Irvine (0-2) with 14 points and freshman forward Will Davis II had 12 points and nine rebounds. Folker had eight points and nine rebounds for the Anteaters.
UC Irvine trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Anteaters pulled even at 35 with 12:18 left to play on Wright's driving lay-in. San Jose State soon answered with an 8-0 run to take a 45-37 lead with 6:28 left. UC Irvine came back with an 11-2 run and took its first lead of the game at 48-47 on Folker's 3-point play with 3:11 left.
San Jose State regained the lead at 49-48 on Shamburger's two free throws, but Folker's lay-in put the Anteaters ahead 50-49 with 1:50 left.
Both teams were ice cold. San Jose State shot 28 percent from the field (16 for 58) and 15 percent from 3-point range (3 for 20). The Anteaters were 33 percent from the field (20 for 60) and 9.1 percent from 3-point range (1 for 11).
San Jose State beat UC Irvine for the fourth straight time and won its fourth straight home opener.
San Jose State jumped to a 10-0 lead and led 23-12 with 4:54 left in the first half, but UC Irvine stormed back and cut the Spartans lead to 25-21 at halftime.
Douglas, a senior guard, scored 10 first-half points for the Spartans, shooting 4 for 8 from the field and 2 for 6 from long range. UC Irvine's Wright came off the bench to score nine points in the opening half. He made all three of his field goal attempts, including one from 3-point range, and was 2 for 2 from the line.
