Michael Pierre Still Looking for a Home

It's been a roller coaster recruiting journey for running back Michael Pierre of Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif. At one time a commitment to New Mexico State, he reopened up his recruiting early this month, and is still seeking a home. Inside Sparta briefly caught up with him to check his status with San Jose State.

At one time, running back Michael Pierre announced that he and his brother, linebacker Ronald, were a package deal. If a school offered both he would, "commit on the spot." Things changed as issues with Ronald's eligibility arose and it appeared he wouldn't be able to join his brother.

In December, he took official visits to San Jose State and New Mexico State on consecutive weekends, and the Aggies won out, and Pierre committed to them shortly after his visit to Las Cruces during the Dec. 9 weekend.

However, things changed earlier this month and Pierre reopened his recruiting. The Signing Period for junior college players was fast approaching and he scrambled to reconnect with the schools how had been recruiting him prior to his pledge to NMSU, and was courting some new suitors as well.

Texas Tech, Nevada, and South Florida were two of those checking out Pierre. At one time he stated that if USF offered he'd commit to the Knights. If that didn't happen he said he'd walk-on at Nevada. Interest from Texas Tech seemed to be fleeting, which left California and San Jose State as the only two schools on his list that had extended offers.

The 5-foot-11, 205 pound speedster said earlier he hadn't heard from Cal in sometime, appearing to have San Jose State as his only real remaining active offer.

The Spartans staff, as often happens when a player commits to another school, moved on to other targets, according to sources. But when Pierre opened up his recruitment again, SJSU reported still had interest.

Then, the coach who was Pierre's main contact at San Jose State left for a position at his alma mater. That may have been the final break as far as SJSU is concerned. The last day of the JC Signing Period was Jan. 15.

"I didn't sign with anyone," Pierre said in a text message to Inside Sparta. "Kirk Doll left so things are kinda shaky (at SJSU)."

With most schools either already in session, or close to beginning classes, it appears now that Pierre will need to wait until fall before signing with a program.
