Spartan Football Signs Impact Players to Roster!

It all starts up front on the offensive and defensive lines states SJSU's head football coach Fitgerald Hill. Now what about a "punter" ?

Thirty-Three athletes have signed the 2003 national letter-of-intent, showing their committment to play football for head coach Fitzgerald Hill and the San Jose State Football program.

"Our goals were to improve our overall ability. We did not want to turn down players who could help make us better. Last {recruiting) year was a step in the right direction. This year, we felt we signed more "impact" players. The coaching staff brought in a wide range of players. It was our intention to increase our overall team speed", explains Coach Hill, who had as many as 11 freshman on last years non conference travel roster.

Twenty of the 33 newcomers are high school products embarking on their first season of major college football. The number of projected freshman is the largest since 1978 when 13 freshman signed with SJSU.

The offensive and defensive lines recieved the most attention this year. Nine offensive and six defensive linemen are joining the SJSU football program. All positions were covered except for "punter".

"It all starts up front. We are excited about that. As we get to 85 scholarships (the NCAA Division 1-A maximum), we will continue to add linemen", states Coach Hill, who is entering his third season at SJSU.
