The six-period scrimmage matched the first offense vs. the second defense, second offense vs. the first defense and the third units on each side of the ball. Following the scrimmage, the Spartans spent a considerable amount of time on all phases of special teams play and unique game circumstances.
Gray was one of four quarterbacks that played in the scrimmage. He was 5-of-9 for 68 yards. Overall, the Spartan passing game was 14-of-29 for 168 yards without an interception.
Sophomore Sean Linton was the leading pass receiver with three receptions for 43 yards. A 34-yard pass from Dasmen Stewart was the second longest play of the scrimmage.
Stewart, now a junior, was 6-of-10 for 86 yards. Sophomore Blake Jurich was 2-of-3 for 9 yards. Junior David Fales, 1-of-7 for 5 yards.
Ervin was one of two ball carriers who had three attempts in the scrimmage. His 1-yard run came in a Red Zone situation with the number-one offense. Later on during special teams play, the San Jose State sophomore broke free for a 60-plus yard kickoff return.
Freshman Jarrod Lawson was the leading rusher with 22 yards on two carries. His 18-yard scamper midway through the scrimmage was the longest run of the day. The San Jose State defense allowed just two runs of 10 or more yards and came up with a pair of quarterback sacks in 16 rushing attempts.
In a battle for the kick scoring duties, junior Harrison Waid converted 4-of-5 field goal tries. His only miss was a 58-yard attempt that was blocked. Freshman Austin Lopez was 2-of-4.
San Jose State returns to practice Monday, August 20, and has single daily practices leading up to the 2012 opener at Stanford on August 31.
