Buena Park (Calif.) linebacker Dru Mathis made his decision on Sunday to commit to San Diego State. He had narrowed his recruitment down to San Diego State, Fresno State, Hawaii, San Jose State and Nevada - through he said his decision ultimately came down to SDSU and Fresno State.
San Jose State had made a hard push for Mathis in recent weeks. The Spartans hosted him for an official visit on Jan. 22 and then visited him in his hometown in the ensuing week.
“San Jose was cool,” Mathis said. “I liked the coaches a lot. The school was still on break, so it was kind of dead on campus. We were able to check everything out though.”
Mathis was only one of two recruits to visit SJSU that weekend. In comparison, he visited with more than 12 other recruits to Hawaii the week prior.
“I liked it more with more recruits because you get to meet more people,” Mathis said. “I definitely got more one-on-one time with the coaches though.”
Ultimately Mathis chose San Diego State, where his brother is currently on the team.
