Two-Way Athlete Jamaal Neal weighing his options

Jamaal Neal updates his recruitment after an impressive senior season.

Los Angeles (Calif.) South Gate High School athlete Jamaal Neal has offers from multiple Mountain West schools, with others interested - Some want him on offense and others want him on defense, but his aggression and power make him a factor no matter where he ends up.

“I’m a power guy, but for my size I feel I have good footwork,” Neal said. “I can juke and cut. I have the stiff arm down… On defense, I’m highly aggressive and versatile. I can play a lot of positions and make it work.”

The do-it-all athlete finished his senior year with 1,234 rushing yards, 788 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns. Defensively he grabbed two interceptions.

San Jose State, Fresno State and UNLV are the offers he is considering while Wyoming and Sacramento State are showing interest. The Spartans and Rebels see him as a running back, whereas the Bulldogs like him at linebacker.

“I’m really open to all of them, but I’ve got to make my final decision here soon,” Neal said. “I still want to see what they all have to offer me, but I know I’m going to have to narrow it down to two and then make my decision.”

A family atmosphere and a fair opportunity at early playing time are on Neal’s priority lists in the school he picks.

“I want it to be a family, I want to feel comfortable," Neal said. "I want to be somewhere where I get a fair chance to play. I want it to be the best players on the field and everyone has an equal opportunity.”

San Jose State got into the mix during the holidays and is now making an extra push to attract him into being a Spartan. SJSU has him scheduled for an official visit on Jan. 27 to make a final impression before signing day.

“It made me happy and it was right before the end of the year,” Neal said of his offer from San Jose State. “I got the San Jose State offer on Dec. 27, two days after Christmas. Even though Christmas passed, that was a great present and a great way to end my year. I really like San Jose State and I want to visit and see what they have to offer.”
