Three-Star athlete R.J. Stone was one of the few at The Opening that played two positions, working with both the best linebackers and defensive ends that the West region has to offer. Stone's abilities have gotten him offers from around the West, but San Jose State hopes to keep him close to home. So far, the Spartans' new staff has made a good impression.
“I love the new coaching staff,” Stone said of San Jose State. “Since they’re so close to home I’ve been able to check them out. Their coaching staff just has great energy, I love it. I feel like this new staff and program is starting to kick up and going to do some great things.
“The coaches dance, all the yelling, it just seems like a lot of fun in there. All the dancing from the players, all the hype, the action and intensity they bring to practice shows they’re ready. It’s a good feel.”
Stone has already accumulated offers from Arizona State, Oregon State, Utah, Washington State, SJSU, San Diego State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada and Colorado State.
“I don’t really mind where I play,” Stone said. “I’d be okay going two blocks away from home or 2,000. As long as the school is a good fit.”
Stone keeps in contact with the staff and identified Fred Guidici as one coach he talks to. Of where SJSU is recruiting him, he said. “I play outside linebacker in more of a rush outside linebacker. I’d still be able to drop into coverages and zone.”
