"I am excited to be able to give something of this magnitude back to San Jose State University," Garcia said. "They have been such an integral part in my life and I am just happy to be at a point in my life that I can do something like this. San Jose State has been a stepping stone that has provided me an education, a degree and of course, the tools I needed to be successful in the NFL. Me, and my family, are proud that I am able to create this legacy that will always serve as a reminder of how much San Jose State means to me."
"Through the generosity of Jeff Garcia, great athletes and teams of the past, present and future will be forever recognized. It will remind us of our proud history and accomplishments and at the same time memorialize a favorite son who grew up in the area, played football and got his degree at San Jose State, and became a NFL player," said San Jose State University director of athletics Chuck Bell in September 2003.
"While his family has provided great support for Jeff over the years, he has, now, in return, been very generous to his family and made them very proud. It's exciting for he and his family to know that the name of Jeff Garcia will forever be on the campus of San Jose State University."
Garcia first enrolled at San Jose State University in the fall of 1990 after spending one year at nearby Gavilan College in his hometown of Gilroy, Calif. He was a quarterback on the 1991, 1992 and 1993 San Jose State football teams. As a sophomore, he was third nationally in passing efficiency. He led San Jose State to its first win in school history over a Big Ten Conference team, the University of Minnesota, and went on to receive honorable mention All-America recognition in 1992.
The school record holder for total offense with 7,274 yards was named the "Outstanding Offensive Player" at the 1994 East-West Shrine All-Star Game in Palo Alto, Calif. He played five seasons (1994 through 1998) for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, was a four-time all-star and led the team to the 1998 Grey Cup championship.
Garcia joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1999 and has taken the team to playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002. After the 2003 season, he signed a multi-year contract to quarterback the Cleveland Browns football team.
Since his return to Northern California as a professional football player, Garcia earned his undergraduate degree as a business administration major from San Jose State University through the National Football League's Continuing Education Program.
