``It's difficult to win on the road against anybody,'' Coach Phil Johnson said. ``We won the game on the defensive end. San Diego is a quality team. They played Arizona tough.''
SJSU was up 39-29 at halftime, but USD hung around long enough to take multiple 1 point leads on four different occasions. Their last one point deficit was at 70-69 with 3:22 to go on a bucket by Torero Brice Vounang.
SJSU took back the lead at 71-70 on a bucket by SJSU's Marquin Chandler with 2:08 left. USD was then unable to score on three shots at the bucket and four free throws down the stretch.
For the third straight game Marquin Chandler led the Spartans in scoring, this time with a season-best 26 points on 11-17 shooting. Guard Alex Elam added 19 points and 4 assists in the winning cause. The Spartans shot 51.7% from the field for the game (30-58) and 58.3% from beyond the three-point line (7-12).
``It was a wild finish,'' Johnson said. ``For 40 minutes, we defended as hard as we can. We played our `man' principles for 40 minutes. We're showing progress on the defensive end. We are getting better. This was a big win.''
SJSU outrebounded the Toreros, 39-33.
The Spartans will meet up again with USD on Dec. 7th in San Jose at the Events Center.
