Dick Tomey a finalist for SJS head football coach

Former Arizona football coach Dick Tomey and Stanford's Ken Margerum have emerged as the two finalists for the head coach vacancy at SJ State.

Former Arizona football coach Dick Tomey has emerged as one of two finalists for the head coach vacancy at San Jose State.

Tomey, 66, currently is assistant head coach and defensive ends coach at Texas.

"I have an interest," Tomey said last week in an interview with the Arizona Daily Star.

The search has been narrowed to Tomey and Stanford assistant Ken Margerum, and is expected to end soon now that the Spartans have hired Tom Bowen as athletic director.

Bowen said he hopes to find a replacement for Fitz Hill, who resigned after the season, by next Wednesday.

"That's a date we're shooting for," Bowen told the San Jose Mercury News. "We have a lot of interesting candidates and a lot of people interested in the job."

Bowen has connections to Tomey and Margerum.

He was an associate athletic director at California in 2000-01, when Margerum was an assistant coach for the Golden Bears. Bowen also was the executive director for the San Francisco 49ers Foundation in 2003, when Tomey was an assistant coach there.

"I'm thrilled to death to be (at Texas), but obviously, if there is an opportunity, I'd love to have a chance to pursue it," Tomey said.
