The Reno Gazette is reporting that Nevada Reno's defensive coach in Dave Fipp, is bailing on the wolfpack right in the middle of recruting season to join Dick Tomey and the Spartans.

Fipp is reuniting with coach Dick Tomey, as Fipp played for Tomey at Arizona from 1994-97.

Quotes from the Reno Gazette, and from Nevada head coach, Chris Ault were the following:

"He and Dick are very close," said Ault, who has a friendship with Tomey. "Dave played for him and they go back a ways.

"But it still caught me off guard. I mean, we are in the middle of recruiting season and there is a lot going on."

Fipp coached the UNR Pack last year, coming from Cal Poly. He served as co-defensive coordinator controlling the UNR secondary.

Fipp walked on at Tomey's Arizona team and later earned a scholarship and a starting job as a safety in 1996.

Fipp was the defensive coordinator at Cal Poly in 2002 and 2003.

Fipp spoke highly of Tomey to the San Jose Mercury News 2 weeks ago cooincidentally.

"He's a tremendous man. That's the most important thing," Fipp told the newspaper. "Obviously the bottom line is wins and losses, but it takes a unique ability to combine the two and have the best interest of the student athletes. His ability to balance those two things is remarkable.

"He's obviously had a lot of success on the field. He's won a lot of football games and a lot of big games. But when you talk to people who played for him, it's the kind of job he's done off the field. His heart is in the right place and his values and belief system is all for players and everything that's good about college football."

Who will be next in regards to Tomey's new staff?
