Cal got on the board early knocking out starter Frank Espisito in the FIRST inning. He gave up 3 runs after getting 2 outs. Sam yanked him and put in Andy Cook who stopped the bleeding.
Spartans tied the game later in the third scroing 3 unearned runs of the Cal starter. Cal scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth. But then SJS sealed the win with a big 7 run 6th inning.
The highlights: SJS got the bases loaded with no outs and proceeded to score 4 runs without making an out thanks to Cal pitchers who walked 2 batters and hit 2 batters, all with the bases loaded!! Cal pitchers could not throw strikes that inning at all.
The other 3 runs came from a RBI single by Baker and a 2-RBI single by Bergstrom.
Jahseam George came in to finish the game after Cook, and threw a very impressive 5+ innings giving up only a solo homer and striking out 5.
Cal went down with a whimper in the 9th. I should also mention that Kevin Frandsen has made an AMAZING transition to left field after playing 3rd base all last year. He made not one, but TWO DIVING catches to rob extra base hits from Cal batters. He and Dino Quintero in center are going to do more of that to teams this year!
Spartans take their perfect 4-0 record into this weekend's series against Cal Poly. My impressions thus far is that this Spartan team can HIT. With the exception of Becktel, everyone else in the lineup is contributing.
Baker and Bergstrom look very impressive. Baker can hit to the opposite field and Bergstrom's hits are shots. We still need to find some relievers and maybe a stopper for this team, but evrything else is doing just fine.
SPARTANS ARE LOOKING GOOD!!!
