Scholarship news: Your Scholarship Committee was on the road for two days interviewing students who will attend SJSU in the fall.
They interviewed 13 students at Watsonville High, Aptos High, Soquel High, San Lorenzo High and Cabrillo College. The committee agreed that this group was the best and brightest that they have ever interviewed.
The decision on who gets scholarship money was the toughest ever to decide. Unfortunately, they were only able to help 5 out of the 13, but felt that all the students were deserving. Those getting awards are Aldo Estrada, Cristal Gonzales, Jenna Nybank, Joahnha Palac and Logan Swartz.
We are now helping eight students with their studies at SJSU, thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Scholarship Fund.
The forty members who attended the Marine Lab tour at Moss landing enthusiastically hoped that we could do this again next year. The members learned many amazing facts about our beautiful Monterey Bay. And the lunch at Phil's fish market in Moss Landing was a most enjoyable way to end the morning.
The reception for our new football coach, Dick Tomey and basketball coach George Nessmann proved to be an exciting evening for our members.
The event was held at the Holiday Inn off of ocean street in Santa Cruz.
Theses new coaches really whipped up some enthusiasm for our upcoming football and basketball seasons.
This year we are going to have GREAT TEAMS and a WINNING SEASON! At the reception we honored our student athletes from Santa Cruz County that attend SJSU.
They are Brandon Hennessey, Baseball, Sarah Christianson, Volleyball, and Heidi Romswinckel-Guise, Soccer. Their coaches, Deedee Enabenter-Omidija, Craig Choate, and Doug Thurman spoke about theses outstanding athletes.
We are hoping there will be enough response from you to reinstate our "Over the Hill" bus for football games. Again this year we have been invited to tailgate with the Santa Clara Valley Chapter.
They are a great group of Spartans who have welcomed us year after year. If you are interested in a fun way to get "over the hill" call President Donna Ziel at 336.5043 and let her know.
Mark your calendars now for our annual holiday party and auction!
Mark the date for December 7th, 2005 for the holiday party at Peachwoods bar and grill off of hwy 1 located in the Pasatiempo inn!
This is our annual get together to celebrate the holiday season and to bring funds for our scholarship fund drive!
If you have a donation for our auction, please let chairman, Pat Lamson, know at 831-476-0674. And, it is not too early to ask for donations from central coast companies now, as they are overwhelmed for donations later in the calendar year- FYI.
The annual "annieglass" tour was such a success lastyear that we will be scheduling another tour most likely in November, and just in time for Christmas shopping!
There is also going to be a special evening with local central coast sculptor, Stan Welsh, who teached at SJSU!
This event will be sometime in the fall and we will have information for you at a later date.
We would also like to introduce our newest member Anthony Rocca!
It has been recently learned that Arnold Wechter, whom served on the very first board of directors for the santa cruz alumni/spartan foundation has passed away.
Arnold worked for many years for the santa cruz sentinel as a sports writer and an uatomobile analyst.
If you wish to RSVP for the central coast spartan picnic, please do so by June 8th, 2005.
Just send a self addressed and stamped envelope with a not stating how many people are coming from your group, along with your name and phone number to:
