Coach Tomey, Tom Bowen, John Ralston and John McVay (former 49er president) brought their message of enthusiasm and optimism to the Sutter Club today!
An impressive group of individuals, just like I've read about on the Spartan Thunder.com message boards!
You just get the feeling they know what they are doing! I'd march into hell for these guys any time, and the Spartans at my table shared the sentiment!
Coach Tomey said Sacramento recruiting is being stepped up over previous years, which is very encouraging news!
Maybe in the future we won't lose Sacto products like Ryan Dinwiddie and Paul Pinegar to Boise and Fresno! He was reluctant to predict when we might be in the top echelon in the WAC, but I just get the feeling that he will put a brand of football on the field that us old Spartans love: hardnosed, innovative, passionate, and smart.
Can't wait till the fall!
Tom Bowen--- a very impressive man.
He related the growing support for athletics among students (evidenced by the recent fee increase), the business community (evidenced by Nike, ABC and Comcast TV), and the community in general.
Even some of the faculty are at least willing to take a wait and see attitude about football, an improvement over last year's faculty death sentence for the program!
I enjoyed hearing about his business-like approach to the program. Excellence is a product of comprehensive planning and careful execution, but it takes the right people to do both. Tom stated that he was focused on getting the right people in place at SJSU, and from that excellence will flow.
Boy, do I have a lot of confidence in this fine man!
I still find it remarkable that they came out to Sacramento, which is a bit of a remote Spartan outpost.
That explains the somewhat light turnout, but wait till next year!
Tomey said this will be an annual event. They really got it right by holding this event at the very nervcenter of the Sacramento business community, the Sutter Club. Things that matter in politics, government, business and athletics get discussed and decided here.
A perfect venue for getting local support for our re-born athletics program!
I happened to be sitting at the same table as Mark Harlan, and some other Spartan football fanatics.
He commented that he must be at the hardcore table, after hearing us reminisce about some of the great Spartan games of the past: Air Force, TCU, Fresno 86 and 87, Stanford 1971, and San Diego State 1975. We also relieved some of the heartbreak, like Wesley Walker catching that Joe Roth bomb over Gerald Small in the 75 Cal game (which even "Old Blues" point to as the turning point for Bear football in the 70s). At one point Mark remarked, "You guys are really the hardcore and should join us on the roadshow." LOL!
We exchanged business cards with some of the Spartan fanatics, and we did agree that we would see each other again!
Is a Sacramento/Central valley/Sierra Foothills booster club possible?
This outstanding group of athletics executives give all of us something to fight for!
