Freshman Matt Durkin tossed a complete game as the San Jose State baseball team avoided a sweep and beat No. 3 Rice 2-1 Sunday at Municipal Stadium, handing the Owls their first Western Athletic Conference loss.
Rice, which had won the first two games against the Spartans by a combined score of 16-6, fell to 11-1 in the WAC, 28-7 overall.
Durkin (5-1) didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and ended up allowing nine. He struck out 10 and walked one.
The Spartans (26-11, 6-6) scored both their runs in the third inning.
Matt Durkin was named the Western Athletic Conference baseball "Pitcher of the Week" for the week of April.
Durkin, a freshman from San Jose, Calif. (Willow Glen HS), improved to 5-1 on the season after a complete-game 2-1 victory versus third-ranked Rice on Sunday. Durkin allowed one run, one walk, nine hits and struck out 10 to snap the Owls' 15-game conference winning streak.
Durkin is the third San Jose State pitcher to earn the honor this season.
