SJSU Hockey Wins Gold Rush Tournament

The San Jose State Ice Hockey team finished the semester with a 9-0 victory over Cal to win their second-consecutive Gold Rush Tournament Championship, and seventh overall. After struggling Friday against Washington in the opening round, the Spartans roared back on Saturday to finish the semester undefeated for the first time is team history.

San Jose State sophomore wing Sean Scarbrough scored a hat-trick and goalies Ryan Lowe and Kenny Hamilton teamed up to record the third shutout of the season on Saturday as ice hockey took its second-consecutive Gold Rush Tournament Championship with a 9-0 victory over Cal. It is the seventh Gold Rush title for the Spartans, who began the tournament in 1995 as a way to attract younger players to Bay Area hockey. SJSU defeated the University of Washington 6-3 on Friday. Cal took care of Palmer-West 14-1 in their opening round match.

Cal came into Saturday nights contest after having already played a game earlier in the day. The Bears defeated Washington 4-1 in a Pac 8 Conference game. "Washington was scheduled to leave early Sunday, so we couldn't play them any other time," Cal head coach Cyril Allen said. "It was a conference game so there was no way out of it."

On Friday, the Spartans came out slow against a determined Husky attack that kept close for two periods. However, SJSU pulled away in the third for the 6-3 win. An impassioned talk from head coach Ron Glasow sparked the Spartans to perform at a higher level on Saturday. "Everybody took it too easy," Glasow said after Friday's game. "We're taking the other teams too lightly right now, we think too much of ourselves. We need to get back to just being focused and playing with intensity every shift. That's what we finally did in the third period, but only when our backs were against the wall." Seven Spartans scored in Saturday's championship win.

SJSU finishes the first semester at 17-0-1, the first time in team history it has been undefeated this late into the season.
