The Spartans will be without leading scorer Demetrius Brown indefinitely as the senior forward recovers from a potentially life-threatening infection in his abdomen.

"You don't mess around with a bacterial infection in the abdomen," coach George Nessman said.

Brown, who had missed two games entering this week, was said to be responding to treatment.

He is averaging a team-high 14 points, but shot just 1 of 11 from the field against Santa Clara on Nov. 29 during which team officials learned of his condition.

He did not travel with the team to Cal or Irvine because he was highly contagious.

Brown will also miss both the UOP and Long Beach games most likely, and future games are still pending his actual recovery.

"At this juncture there is no reason to be alarmed, but any infection is a serious issue and you have to be careful," Nessman told the San Jose Mercury News. "Once they feel he's fully healthy, they'll return him to us.

That could be in two days or in 20 days. Our only concern is that he gets healthy."

Brown, 6-6, missed last season because of injury.
