Long Beach, CA -- Alex Elam's jumpers were crucial as he popped a game-high 17 points as your San Jose State Spartans defeated the Long Beach State 49ers, 69-56, in a non-conference match up at the Walter Pyramid at "The Beach".
Menelik Barbary registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (4-5). Julian Richardson scored seven points and handed out 10 assists as San Jose State snapped a four-game losing streak.
``Jared was tough. He played way above his size,'' Barbary said. ``I think we brought toughness to the game.''
Long Beach State (2-5) was led by Kevin Houston who finished with 16 points. Aaron Nixon was kosher for 13 points while Shawn Hawkins contributed in 11 points as the 49ers lost their third game in a row.
``They defended well and kept us from getting good looks at the basket,'' Long Beach State Coach Larry Reynolds said.
San Jose State shot 45.5 percent from the floor in the first half and it easily maintained a lead into a 34-28 score at the half.
The 49ers connected on just 1-of-11 shots from beyond the arc in the second half and they were outscored by San Jose State 35-28.
``Our defensive energy was really good. We slowed them down a little bit and got them to play our tempo,'' SJSU Coach George Nessman said.
``I told the team in this game, the difference was with six or seven minutes to go, we didn't blink and they did,'' Nessman said. ``In the last couple of games we didn't play very well in the closing minutes. We were really determined tonight to finish the game strongly.''
The Spartans return to action, Saturday, December 17, when they host Drake University in a non-conference game.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Lamisha Augustine made all five of her 3-point shots and finished with 35 points and 11 rebounds Saturday to lift your ladies of Sparta to a 78-66 win over Colorado State.
Amber Jackson added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (3-4).
San Jose State, playing before a bleak home crowd of 360 at the Events Center, shot 50 percent (16 of 32) from the floor in the first half while taking a 36-32 lead, then pulled away in the second half. The Spartans shot 47.6 percent (30 of 63) from the floor and were 12 of 19 at the free-throw line.
Anetero Uiagalelei added 12 points and five assists for the Spartans. CSU was outrebounded 37-34 and committed 16 turnovers to San Jose State's 10.
The Spartans will return to non-conference action in a "Rivalry Series" game against the Broncos at Santa Clara on Saturday, December 17, at 7:00 p.m.
