San Jose State upsets WAC power Fresno State

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Carlton Spencer scored 20 points, including a pair of key baskets in the final two minutes, and grabbed eight rebounds as San Jose State stunned Fresno State 64-61 on Saturday.

Menelik Barbary added 18 points as the Spartans (2-14, 1-3 WAC) snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Hector Hernandez scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs (13-4, 2-2), who lost their second straight following a four-game winning streak. Eddie Miller added 14 and Ja'Vance Coleman had 12.

Quinton Hosley recorded his fifth double-double in the last nine games with 12 rebounds and 10 points for Fresno State, which lost two in a row for the first time. The Bulldogs also shot .365 from the field, the second straight sub .400 night and just the third this year.

Jamon Hill added 12 for the Spartans, who ended a 15-game losing streak to their California rivals. San Jose State last beat the Bulldogs on Jan. 7, 1999 at home.

Fresno State committed 16 turnovers while San Jose State turned it over just six times.

San Jose State held a tenuous lead through most of the second half. Miller made a shot to give Fresno State a one-point edge going into the final five minutes.

Lance Holloway hit a short jumper to put San Jose State up for good with 3:40 remaining.

Spencer scored the final four points, including a jumper with 21 seconds left, as the Spartans held off Fresno State pressure.

Fresno State led 31-29 at halftime.
