Top SoCal RB has SJSU in the mix

Running back James McConico of Compton (Calif) High School was the recipient last fall of a scholarship offer from San Jose State. It's still early in the process for the four-star talent, but he spoke Sunday with Inside Sparta about his current status.

With seven reported offers, including one early on from San Jose State, running back James McConico of Compton (Calif) High School is already sporting an impressive list of schools in pursuit of his talents. "I got the offer from San Jose right after my offer from Oregon," McConico said. His offer list, in addition to the Spartans and Ducks, includes Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Nebraska, and Washington.

McConico is the No. 5 back running back in the country, according to Scout.com. As such he knows he is a wanted commodity and is in no hurry to make a decision. As a matter of fact he's barely begun the recruiting process. "I'm concentrating more on school right now," he said. "I've been thinking about it a little and I may start really getting into it sometime in April or May."

He hasn't totally ignored things, however. He recently attended the USC Junior Day and told Scout.com that said he would relish an offer from the Trojans. "Who wouldn't want one from them?" he said.

So where does that leave SJSU? "They are definitely in the mix," he said. "I'm not leaving anyone out. I haven't really spoken to any coaches so I don't know much about any of the other schools."

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound McConico said schools are primarily talking with his coach - Calvin Bryant.

As a 2008 junior, McConico ran for 1,234 yards on only 62 carries (19.9 ypc) and scored 14 touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 115 yards (57.5 ypc) and scored on both of them.
