A visitor today with SJSU ties

Spring Practice continues today for the San Jose State football team. Inside Sparta has confirmed one visitor for the session, an offensive lineman with a tight connection to SJSU. Is there an offer on the table, and will that connection be strong enough to get him to San Jose.

The family of Canyon High School offensive tackle Shane Moniz is already intimately familiar with San Jose State University and the athletic program. Shane's sister Lauren will graduate next month from SJSU. "She played soccer for SJSU," Moniz said. "I've been up there a few times to see her play and I really like it."

Shane will be making another visit today. He said he will take in Friday's session of the Spartans practice. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound tackle plays at a position the SJSU staff is seeking. "They've told me they are looking for a tackle," Moniz said. "But I don't have an offer yet."

However, even with the family ties to San Jose State, the Spartans may not be the top choice for Moniz. "I went up to Oregon last season," he said. "The area was nice and the equipment and facilities there were real nice."

Moniz went on to say that Duck offensive line coach Steve Greenwood had been to Canyon to observe the 2008 Second-Team All-Foothill League selection.

Oregon isn't the only Pac-10 school in he mix. "I visited UCLA three days ago," he said. "I plan on going to Oregon again this summer and may visit UCLA again."

The Canyon Cowboys, located in Canyon Country, Calif., just north of Los Angeles, finished the 2008 season with a 5-5 record.

Moniz reports a 3.0 grade-point-average along with an SAT score of 1300. He said he'll be taking the ACT next month but appears fully qualified academically. He also said that he's not sure yet which major he'll pursue in college.
