With the loss, San Jose State falls to 26-12. USF improves to 20-21 in achieving win No. 300 for head coach Nino Giarratano. The Dons completed the sweep of the annual two-game home-and-home set between the teams, as they had taken a 4-2 decision in the earlier meeting this season at San Jose Municipal Stadium back on Tuesday night, March 10.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Eric LeBaron, making his fourth appearance of the year and just his first major college start, gave up a walk and a base hit in the opening inning, but still managed to face just the minimum three batters in the frame. The transfer from College of Marin walked leadoff batter Zach Kim on five pitches before striking out Bobby Ethel for the first out. Kim then swiped his team-best 25th base on the year, before making contact with the ball on Derek Poppert's grounder toward third base. Kim was thus called out on the play, which was ruled an infield single. Poppert was in turn thrown out two pitches later by Bryson Rahier, as the sophomore catcher fired to shortstop Kyle Bellows to get his counterpart trying to steal second.
LeBaron got into trouble after registering the first two outs in the home half of the second, loading the bases on a looped single to center, a balk and back-to-back walks. On the first pitch to No. 9 hitter Dane Braunecker, however, junior third baseman Corey Valine made a diving stab toward the hole to his left, got up and fired across to Danny Stienstra to end the threat.
