San Jose State concludes a six-game non-conference stretch and improves to 27-12 on the year. Fresno Pacific, ranked No. 8 nationally in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), drops to 29-15. The game was a make-up after having originally been postponed due to inclement weather back on March 22.
The Spartans got two home runs from Jacob Bruns and a three-run shot by Kyle Bellows while trotting out to a 14-4 advantage after just five innings. They then held off a furious rally by the visiting Sunbirds, who scored eight unanswered runs over the last four frames, and actually scored in every inning after the third. In the end, San Jose State out-hit Fresno Pacific, 22-21, in a wild game that featured 26 runs and 43 hits in all.
Bellows and Bruns had three hits apiece and combined for seven RBI. Anthony Bona was 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Craig Hertler made his return to the starting lineup and the top of the Spartan batting order after a short absence due to a minor injury, and reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored. Jason Martin was hit by pitch twice to increase his conference-leading total to 17, and was 2-for-3 for the day with three runs scored and one driven in. Bryson Rahier added three hits, while John Shaffer had a pair.
