Another pitching gem for SJSU gets a win

After the heartbreaking loss in Friday night's opening game in the weekend series with Fresno State, San Jose State came out sluggish in an 8-2 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Fresno State. However, Ryan Shopshire got the Spartans on track with a 15-strikeout shutout performance in game two, as the Spartans split the day with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.

Sport is often a combination of talent, skill, and emotion. When one of those is missing for a team the outcome of a contest is rarely favorable. So, it is understandable that after Friday night's 1-0 ninth inning loss to Fresno State, the San Jose State baseball team came out a little flat in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. As such the Spartans were on the wrong end of an 8-2 score.

However, redemption for the day came in the form of a 15-strikeout, complete game blanking of the defending National Champion Bulldogs by SJSU senior Ryan Shopshire. It's the first 15-strikeout performance by a Spartan since 2003. "I felt all three of my pitches were on today," Shopshire said. "What was key today was that I was attacking the hitters and that I had no walks."

Shopshire gave credit to senior catcher Anthony Aguilera for a stellar performance behind the plate, but it was Aguilera's bat that made the difference. With the based loaded in the second inning Aquilera sent a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Jacob Bruns from third. It would be all the run production the Spartans would need, but they added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. "Coach (Piraro) came up to me and told me to hit a pitch I could drive and hit it to the outfield," Aguilera said. "I finally got my pitch to hit and got it to the outfield. I did my job."
