Spartans Fail To Get Series Sweep

The San Jose State baseball team was six outs away from coming home with a four game sweep over the Aggies of New Mexico State in Las Cruces, NM. But, a four run rally in the 8th inning by the Aggies was enough to keep the Spartans brooms tucked away.

Six outs was all the San Jose State baseball team needed in order to leave Las Cruces, NM with a four game sweep over the Aggies of New Mexico State. But, the Spartans slim 8-7 lead at the start of the 8th inning didn't last long. Aggies' left fielder Leo Aguirre led off the 8th with a solo blast to tie the game, igniting a six hit, four run rally. A two run homer by NMSU first baseman Mike Sodders gave the Aggies a two run lead. The Aggies scored one more in the 8th when right fielder Nate Shaver singled, scoring shortstop Bryan Marquez to make it 11-8, which was the final score, as the Spartans failed to score in the 9th.

The Spartans, offensively were led by left fielder Jacob Bruns, who had three hits on four at bats, including a two-run homer in the 6th.

Tyle Heil started the game for the Spartans on the mound and lasted until the 6th inning (5.2 innings, 7 earned runs, 8 hits, 4 walks, and 6 strike outs). Heil was relieved by Trevor Gibson (2.0 innings, 4 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk, 1 strike out). Anthony Vega, coming of an excellent relief outing yesterday, finished the 8th inning for Gibson, giving up no runs on one hit, and one strike out.
