San Jose State University baseball players Karson Klauer and Scott Sobczak were each named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team late last week.
Klauer, a junior infielder out of Hollister, Calif. (San Benito HS), and Sobczak, a senior right-handed starting pitcher from Millbrae, Calif. (Serra HS), were each chosen to the 10-player First Team for the University Division, and now move on to the Academic All-America ballot.
San Jose State was the only school that had multiple honorees for District VIII, which consists of schools located in California, Hawaii, Arizona, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The University Division includes only those student-athletes from NCAA Division I programs. The only other Western Athletic Conference honoree was senior New Mexico State University outfielder Richard Stout, who made the District VI Second Team.
Klauer's 3.88 GPA in business administration with a concentration in management, is the third-highest of the group, while Sobczak maintains a 3.48 GPA in communication studies.
This marks the second straight year that Klauer has earned this distinction, and the first such honor for Sobczak. Klauer thus adds to an already-impressive list of academic awards, as he is a two-time Academic All-WAC honoree and two-time San Jose State University Scholar-Athlete. Klauer has posted the highest cumulative GPA of any Spartan male student-athlete for each of the past two academic years, at 3.896 and 3.861, respectively.
