Just Another Come-From-Behind Win for SJSU

Senior Jack Adams went the distance in his third career start and San Jose State inched one game closer to the WAC regular season championship with yet another come-from-behind win on Friday. This time Nevada was the victim as the Spartans came from two down to take the 3-2 victory.

It's almost getting to be a habit with the San Jose State baseball team in the second-half of the season. Spot the opponent some early runs, then come back for the win in the late innings. It happened again on Friday night as the Spartans drew their magic number to one with a 3-2 win over Nevada at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. Senior Jack Adams went the distance for the first time in his college career, in what could be his final regular season showing as a Spartan.

"Today I didn't have my great stuff," Adams said. "This was a big game and I knew I had the defense behind me and the bats would come through. It was one of those nights when you just fight for your team."

The winning run came on the bottom of the seventh when senior Kyle Bellows scored on a passed ball by Nevada junior reliever Tyler Graham. His first pitch to junior Karson Klauer just missed the Hollister native's chin, then sailed past Wolfpack catcher Travis Simas.

"(Valine) hit it far enough into the outfield where I could get to third," Bellows said. "It was just a reaction. It was a pretty wild pitch, so it was easy to read."

The Spartans need to win one game out of the remaining three to win the WAC regular season championship. The victory on Friday was accomplished without head coach Sam Piraro in the dugout as he was serving a one-game suspension for being ejected from Tuesday's game against Stanford. Associate Head Coach Tom Kunis took over managerial duties for the Spartans on Friday.

"We didn't panic," Kunis said. "We waited, and we got some opportunities. Valine did a great job in leading off with a double in the sixth, then he came right back in the seventh with a key hit."

If the Spartans clinch the regular season conference championship they will have the No. 1 seed going into the WAC Tournament, which begins on Thursday in Hawai'i.
