SJSU Visits SoCal RB Kyle Middlebrooks

Running back Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley High School already has an offer from San Jose State. The Spartans are one of two schools, along with San Diego State, that have thrown their hats into the ring in an attempt to secure his signature in February. SJSU was recently on the Fountain Valley campus, and Middlebrooks spoke with Inside Sparta about his chances of becoming s Spartan.

Fountain Valley (Calif) High School is the alma mater of San Jose State coach Ken Margerum. The recently inducted member of the College Football Hall of Fame was back in his old neighborhood on Thursday evaluating another talented prospect - running back Kyle Middlebrooks.

The Spartans were the first, and are one of two schools that have offered the 6-foot, 200-pound Middlebrooks. In 2008 Middlebrooks carried the ball 149 times for 1276 yards - a whopping 8.56 yards-per-carry average. His longest run was for 80-yards, and he scored 15 rushing touchdowns. Fountain Valley went 7-3 and tied for the Sunset League Championship.

"Yes, coach Margerum was here watching me during track practice," Middlebrooks said. "He talked to my coach and told him they really want me at San Jose State."

During the spring evaluation period coaches are allowed two on-campus visits - one to evaluate a players athletic talent, and one to review academics. The only contact allowed is a greeting. Coaches are also allowed to make one phone call to a prospective student athlete. The period ends on May 31.

Middlebrooks told Inside Sparta on April 3 that UCLA was the clear leader, however, and if the Bruins offered he would most likely commit on the spot. Since then things have changed.

"A lot more Pac-10 schools are showing interest lately," he said. "USC has come by, and others. It's always been my dream to play in the Pac-10 so I have to see what kind of offers I get from those schools before I can make a decision."

He added that while he has no plans at the moment to camp at San Jose State, he is keeping his options open for the time being.
