LA Scout Combine Quick-Hitters

Saturday was the Los Angeles Combine held at Harbor Junior College in Wilmington, Calif. Inside Sparta was on hand and found quite a few players who have received interest from San Jose State, including a pair of offers, and a group heading up for Sunday's San Jose State Junior Day.

About 150 players were in attendance on Saturday for the Combine. The event consists of timed drills - shuttle, broad jump, 40-yard-dash, vertical leap, and others. The day finished with the one-on-one competitions. Many athletes are known, but there are always those who get their real first attention as a result of their performance at such combines.

Inside Sparta was in attendance was talked to several players who have been receiving interested from San Jose State, including a pair of recent offers.

  • Tight end Marcus Howard of Inglewood (Calif) High School reports he received a verbal offer on Wednesday from San Jose State
  • Bene Benwikere of Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., also reports a verbal offer from San Jose State

Leuzinger High School head coach Deon Toliver told Inside Sparta that a group of five players from the Lawndale, Calif., program will leave for San Jose at 5 a.m. in order to attend the SJSU Junior Day being held on Sunday. Included in the group is quarterback Teshon Burton and wide receiver Denzel Idris. Both players reported the SJSU staff told them that a good showing at the event could result in offers.

Another quarterback that is reporting interest from SJSU is Cody Fajardo of Servite High School in Anaheim. Fajardo's teammate - Kirifi Taula, who is reported to hold an offer from San Jose State - was schedule to be at the combine but was a no-show.

Other players reporting interest from SJSU include:

  • Defensive back Enrique Thomas of Rio Mesa High School in Ventura, Calif. Thomas is the younger brother of current USC defensive back Kevin Thomas.
  • Defensive back Devon Hall, also of Rio Mesa. Hall could very well be the sleeper of this combine as he broke his collarbone last year and missed most of the season. We'll have more on his combine performance later
  • Offensive tackle Shane Moniz of Canyon High School in Canyon Country, Calif. Moniz was a visitor to one of the SJSU spring practices
  • Linebacker Anthony Pohahau of Wilcox (Adrian) High School in Santa Clara, Calif

Running back James McConico of Compton (Calif) High School, who also has an offer from San Jose State, participated in the combine. He said he is concentrating on finishing up his school year before he begins to focus on recriuting.

Inside Sparta will have much more on all of these players throughout the week.
