Final Fall Camp Scrimmage Quick Hitters

The 2009 San Jose State fall football camp concluded on Saturday with a scrimmage that was somewhat more tempered then previous full-pad sessions. Inside Sparta brings you Quick Hitters from the practice and comments from SJSU head coach Dick Tomey and assistant Brent Brennan.

Saturday was another warm summer day at Spartan Stadium as the San Jose State football team concluded their fall camp with a full-pad scrimmage in front of several hundred fans. Inside Sparta brings you its Quick Hitters on the day. We'll have more, including photos, later.

  • The offense dominated today
  • Quarterback Jordan La Secla started the scrimmage
  • No quarterback has been named the starter at this time
  • Coach Tomey singled out freshman Cory Murphy as impressing among the young quarterbacks
  • New junior tight end Chris Bryant suited up for the first time today and saw reps with the second team. We'll have more on Bryant including comments from SJSU head coach Dick Tomey and tight ends coach Brent Brennan
  • With so many injuries, Coach Tomey said hitting was less intense in this scrimmage, but this gave them a chance to see other players who can contribute
  • Coach Tomey said true freshmen Travis Johnson, Ronnie Yell, and Chris Hill will probably play against USC
  • Tomey also said that the due to budget issues the coaching staff will be taking a pay cut and forced furloughs
  • Sophomore wide receivers Michael Avila and Josh Harrison had two long catch and runs for touchdowns
  • There will be a weekly Dick Tomey radio show on 1590 KLIV. It will be held at Original Joe's and run from 8-9 p.m on Wednesday's and will be a call-in show. Further details will be published at
  • Senior Terrance Williams is still out but no definitive decision has yet been made as to how long he will be sidelined
  • There has still been no word from the NCAA regarding senior running back Patrick Perry's status
  • Fall practice begins on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m.
  • Senior long snapper Matt Wigley also has a decent punting leg
  • Senior punter Philip Zavala has a very good throwing arm
  • Junior cornerback Brandon Driver will be out at least another month
  • Freshman Ray Rodriguez has been moved to tight end
  • Junior wide receiver Marquis Avery has another spectacular catch
  • There were about a dozen high school prospects in attendance at the scrimmage
