Independence High School head football coach Norm Brown is a former San Jose State football player who will be seeing one of his star players continue his football career at his alma mater. Running back Derek Muaava committed to San Jose State on Monday after learning the Spartan staff would honor their offer of a scholarship, even though Muaava is sidelined for the season with a knee injury. Brown compared Muaava to a former Spartan great.
"Derek is an outstanding player, probably the best prospect to come out of here since Andre Riley," Brown said. "I'd say he looks to be the next Johnny Johnson, who I played with in college and was my roommate."
Muaava has surgery on his knee the day he committed to SJSU, and Brown reported that things went well.
"The surgery was extremely successful and he's rehabbing now," he said. "You can look forward to seeing him checking out San Jose State practices."
