Key newcomers: IF David Pierson, IF Ruben Martinez.
Key losses: IF Gabe Lopez, C Adam Shorsher, P Jahseam George, P Dom Gemmell, DH Hector Zamora, IF Ray Adams, P Jeremy Rogelstad.
Spartan Thunder Outlook:
Piraro summed up the state of his team when he said: ``We lost a hunk of guys.'' The Spartans must replace a majority of their offense -- including leading hitter Lopez -- and a good portion of their pitching.
They return Durkin, who went 11-3 with a 2.75 ERA as a freshman last season. Corrick is back, too. He hit .353 last season, second on the team to Lopez.
Piraro likes his team's makeup but doesn't see much power. He said Durkin probably would hop around in the rotation, depending on the matchup. Piraro doesn't want the right-hander to face every team's No. 1, fearing that a 1-0 loss does SJSU no good. ``My feeling is when Matt pitches, we have to win the game,'' Piraro said.
As Piraro sees it, his team should be much better next season. ``If you're going to get the Spartans, you better get 'em this year,'' Piraro said. ``We're hoping to be good in '03, but that's going to take some development of some young players.''
