With the graduation of long snapper Matt Wigley, the San Jose State football staff had the position on it's list from day one. Shortly before Signing Day they identified a player of interest and yesterday they received his commitment.
"I went up to visit San Jose State on Friday and took a couple days to think about it, but I called and gave them my commitment yesterday," Drew Ferris of San Diego Jewish Academy told Inside Sparta on Tuesday. "I loved it up there and I really believe in what Coach (Mike) MacIntyre is doing at San Jose State."
Ferris will come to San Jose State as a walk-on but depending on what needs the staff looks to fill after spring ball, he said he could receive a scholarship as early as August, which would count against the Class of 2010.
"At the latest they told me I'd have a scholarship in January," Ferris said.
The 6-foot-2, 209-pound Ferris said he also had interest from Old Dominion and South Alabama, but decided to stay close to home.
Ferris has been working with Chris Sailer Kicking and according to their website:
"Drew has exploded onto the snapping scene. Ball is very fast and has nice consistency. Good, long frame that will accommodate some good weight easily. Strong kid that will just keep getting better the more he works on it."
The Spartan staff first noticed Ferris shortly before Signing Day, which new defensive coordinator Kent Baer was in the San Diego area checking out Ja'Rodd Watson of nearby Grossmont Junior College.
"Coach Baer stopped by my school by surprise and asked for my transcripts, that was the Thursday before Signing Day," Ferris said. "They wanted me to sign then but being a long snapper is different then other positions so I wanted to take some time. But after visiting the campus and meeting the coaches my mind is made up."
