SJS Freshman Tosses Shutout in 1st NCAA Start!

SJSU freshman, Matt Winck, tosses a complete game shutout of PAC 10 team Washington State at Municipal Stadium sunday. The kids got game!

In his 1st ever NCAA start, Freshman , Matt Winck, tossed a complete game shutout in a 12-0 rout of PAC 10 team Washington State.

The young and fiesty grappler faced 34 batters, while only allowing nine hits and issuing zero walks. He also struck out six flayling Cougars to boot!

The shutout drops the Cougars to a 1-8 record ion the season, while the Spartans seem to be starting to show some nice cohesive gelling as they reach one game above .500 on the early season.

The early WAC season has Rice in the number one spot with an 8-1 record, Hawaii in second with a 7-3 record, and SJSU in third with a 6-5 record.

Rounding out the bottom in the cellar dwellar arena are LA Tech at 4-5, Fresno at 4-7, and Nevada at 4-9.

On February 10th, SJSU's Matt Durkin was named the co-player of the week in the WAC.

Durkin, a sophomore from Willow Glen, Calif. (Willow Glen HS), posted a 12-1 win over Cal Poly, pitching six innings and striking out 10 batters in his 2003 debut.

Durkin gave up just one earned run, three hits and one walk in the contest.

This was Durkin's third WAC Pitcher of the Week award.

Tuesday the 25th's game features St Mary's at SJSU with a 2PM start.
