Recruiting Player Evaluations

By Russ Blake, Mike Sullivan & Brian Towey. We take a look at some of the top talent that might/will land in the Big East over the next couple of seasons. Some of these players have expressed interest in Seton Hall too.

Corey Chandler: I think the challenge for Corey Chandler will be to prove that he can run a team at the Big East level. I do not question his scoring skills one bit. But in the 6-1 to 6-2 range, he will likely have to learn to make the transition to the point guard slot. Time will tell if he can do that.

Orlando Allen: I had a chance to watch Orlando Allen quite a bit with the O.J. Mayo led D-I Greyhounds squad. He's a sheer physical specimen and has prototypical size for a five man at the Big East level.

While he didn't get a lot of touches offensively, I think he has the chance to develop into a solid low post presence at the high major level. He showed a willingness to bang, and I am sure skill development will be the major emphasis when he arrives at Seton Hall next fall.

Corey Raji has made a name for himself on the travel circuit with Jimmy Salmon's Playaz Basketball Club. While he's only in the 6-5/6-6 height range, Raji is a terrific rebounder. However, if he is to make it at the high major level, I think he has to show more skills on the perimeter. In Northern Bergen County where he plays, he can get away with playing the four slot.

The challenge will be for him to show signs that he's capable of making the transition to the wing. He's already being courted aggressively by a number of high major programs, so it will be interesting to see how his play and recruitment evolve in the coming months.

Brandon Walters: 6'8''-6'9'' C, Lincoln HS, long, wiry, hard-working, good attitude, keeps improving, nice upside.

Talor Battle- 5'11'' PG/1G Bishop Maginn HS in Albany area..missed all of summer play with an injury..supposedly had (has?) an offer from UMass..Shifty, good feel for game, a little undersized.

Idris Hilliard, 6'6'' combo forward from the Hun School in New Jersey..impressive athlete..skills still catching up with athleticism..good potential..still developing

Andrew Gabriel, 6'5'' PF/SF, Christ the King- something of a sleeper coming out of the CHSAA..can score in the post and also face you up a bit..like his upside..could start this year at CK on a size-deprived team..played with LI Lightning (not Corey Fisher's team) in AAU ball.

Melquan Bolding..Archbishop Stepinac, White Plains..reclassified to class of 2008..explosively athletic 6'3'' wing player who attended Beacon HS previously, can knock down the three..Academics?? Should be one of the top incoming players in the CHSAA.
