In 2012, South Alabama will be classified as a transitional FBS team, the final step before full FBS membership. With the rise in status comes a rise in competition and a corresponding rise in talent will be required in order to compete. In 2010, the Lamar Cardinals were the hosts for USA's first ever game at the opponent's home field, a 26-0 South Alabama victory. This year Lamar served as another first: USA's first repeat opponent. More importantly than that, the Cardinals also were integral in the Jags run to a 19-0 record in program history following the 30-8 win.

Jeffrey Gay was part of history last fall when his Atlantic Coast High School Stingrays became the only school first-year football program in modern Florida history to achieve a winning record with a 6-4 mark. From July 18th until July 20th, the athletic directors of the Sun Belt Conference met in New Orleans to chart the course for the league. Mostly dealing with the changes that will come when South Alabama joins the conference, a decision was reached on the status of USA games in league standings for 2012.
