More Baseball Players Sign for 2011-2012

The University of South Alabama has added to its growing list of baseball signees for the 2012 season. Joining the fray are catcher J.T. Files of Navarro (Texas) Junior College, RHP Jamie Dennis of Northwest Shoals Community College and LHP Andrew Fonzi of Gulf Coast Community College (Panama City, Fla.).

Files, originally from Mesquite, Texas, comes to South Alabama by way of the University of Texas and by way of Navarro Junior College. Files redshirted his one year with the Longhorns then transferred to Navarro for the 2010 season where he hit .380 with 2 HR and 30 RBI in 121 at bats. He's a solid defensive catcher with very good catch and throw skills and some on-base ability at the plate. As a senior at Poteet HS, Files batted .397 with 13 doubles, five home runs and 37 RBI. As a junior, he hit .460 with 19 doubles, seven home runs and 55 RBI. In his high school career, Files collected 52 doubles and 15 home runs while hitting at least .320 every season. He played last summer in the Texas Collegiate Wood Bat League.

Chalk the Jamie Dennis signing up to nice talent evaluation by the coaching staff. Head-Coach-to-be Mark Calvi saw Jamie Dennis in the fall and liked what he saw. So after posting a 3-2 record and 2 saves with a 6.00 ERA in 2010 and without seeing him pitch an inning this spring, Calvi took a commitment from Dennis. Dennis has not disappointed, with 14 Saves in 21 appearances, a 1-1 record with 26 hits, 8 walks and 43 strike-outs in 33.1 innings to date. Opponents are hitting .217 against Dennis. Last season was Dennis' first season pitching "down low" and there were some growing pains, but everything seems to have clicked now as he's dominated the ACCC North this spring. Even through some struggles last year, Dennis exhibited great make-up on the mound and a bulldog mentality.

LHP Andrew Fonzi (Gulf Coast CC – Panama City) has also committed to play for South Alabama next spring. On the year Fonzi is 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA and 2 saves. He's allowed 58 hits and issued 20 walks while striking out 39. Last week Fonzi threw a complete game shutout vs. Pensacola JC in a critical Panhandle Conference showdown as GCCC tries to claw its way in a playoff spot. Last year Fonzi posted a 4-1 record with a 2.90 ERA and will be a welcome addition to the staff as a LHP.

The coaching staff is still out recruiting evaluating for 2012, , 2013 and 2014 with a few additions to 2011 still possible.
